TMJ

What is TMJ?
-The TMJ or temporomandibular joint is a hinge-like joint that connects the lower jaw to the skull.  It allows you to perform such movements as opening and closing your mouth, chewing, speaking, and yawning.

Causes of TMD
-Everyone has a TMJ-2 to be exact, but not everyone has TMD or temporomandibular joint disorder.  TMD occurs when the joint does not function properly.  The exact causes of TMD are unclear, but several risk factors can contribute to this condition.  Some of the most common causes include:
-jaw injury, causing damage to the joint
-teeth grinding or clenching
-stress leading to muscle tension in the jaw
-nail biting or constant gum chewing
-genetic presdisposition

Symptoms of TMD
-Jaw pain, facial pain, or facial muscle tenderness
-Difficulty opening or closing the mouth, locking or the joint
-Chronic headaches, migraines, or pain around the ear

What is Botox/ Neurotoxin/Neuromodulator?
- Neurotoxin is a purified botulinum toxin that temporarily relaxes the muscles where it is injected.

How does Botox Work to Treat TMD?
-When Botox is injected into the muscles around the temporomandibular joint, it causes the jaw muscles to relax, reducing the tension in the joint. This can provide relief from the pain and discomfort associated with TMJ. Botox injections can also help to prevent teeth grinding, which can exacerbate TMJ symptoms.

Benefits of Botox for TMD
-Botox has several benefits for the treatment of TMJ.
Non-surgical: Botox injections are non-surgical, meaning they do not require incisions or anesthesia.
Quick: Botox injections are quick and can be performed in a doctor’s office in a matter of minutes.
Safe: Botox injections are considered safe when administered by a qualified healthcare provider.
Effective: Botox injections can significantly relieve TMJ symptoms, including pain and stiffness, and improve your quality of life.
